On the North side of Baltimore County sits the original house of Baltimore resident and famed horror writer Edgar Allan Poe. Originally constructed in 1830, the house now serves as a museum dedicated to Poe’s writings and life story.

While Poe only lived in the house for around two years, he wrote some of his earliest stories there. These stories would help propel him to fame, and encourage him to write some of his more famous works, including “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Raven.”

Today, Poe is hailed as the father of the modern short story. He pioneered the form by writing pieces which feature tight plotlines, high drama, and unresolved climaxes. The Poe House offers further insight into Poe’s life story and his writings, and may help you understand what drove some of the themes in his writing, especially his usage of Gothic writing conventions. Here, you’ll gain insight into the life of one of Maryland’s most influential literary figures ever.

Queen Anne's group:

About a mile away from Poe’s memorial, this small home doubles as a museum about Poe where guided tours are provided. Poe lived here with his aunt, sick mother, and some of his cousins. While Poe considered Richmond his home, his achievements in Baltimore ultimately defined his legacy. He met his wife, started his career, and even extended his career in Baltimore thanks to John Pendleton Kennedy.
